As it stands, the rugged and waterproof mobile phones of the second decade of the twenty-first century far exceed anything that has previously been available outside the world of science fiction; however, things can undoubtedly develop further.
For example, most rugged and waterproof mobile phones tend to be a little chunkier and heavier than their more fragile and disposable mainstream cousins. However, all this could change over the coming decade with manufacturers and scientific researchers making waterproofing technology breakthroughs at an unprecedented rate.
At TUFF Phones we think it is now only a matter of time before researchers succeed in developing a workable and effective sprayable water-repelling material.
The main benefits of this kind of technology would be twofold: it would be relatively cheap to apply and would also be extremely durable – perfect for commercial waterproofing purposes.
So far, the most advanced innovation in this area that we are aware of comes from researchers at Australian National University who have been working on a flexible and durable sprayable nanoparticle waterproofing material.
"The surface is a layer of nanoparticles, which water slides off as if it's on a hot barbecue," report the researchers. "A lot of the functional coatings today are very weak, but we will be able to apply the same principles to make robust coatings that are, for example, anti-corrosive, self-cleaning or oil-repellent."
