UK residents receive 13 per cent more spam calls than residents of any other country in Europe
Online research of 2055 adults conducted by YouGov shows that UK residents receive 13 per cent more spam phone calls than any other European country.
35 per cent of those surveyed receive at least one spam phone call each week with 24 per cent answering a call from an unknown number.
Most recipients of unwanted calls hang up immeidately (63 per cent), some allow the call to continue so that they can find out why they're being contacted (14 per cent). Interestingly a huge number of people will stay on the line to play along and waste the caller's time (25 per cent).
Worryingly an average of 3 per cent of UK adults that have received unwanted and fraudulent calls have lost money through it, this rate increases to 7 per cent in Scotland.
Hiya CEO Alex Algard has commented on the results saying that, "Defrauding people is big business. Scammers are getting more sophisticated. There are some convincing fraudsters out there using mobile phones to entice people into giving away personal data and financial information. Scammers are particularly good at luring people with the false promise of free money, for example, accident compensation that will never materialise."
