Our top three tough smartphones
Tough phones are becoming smarter and more capable each year, no longer are ruggedized devices something your mates will laugh at if you pop it down on the bar while out for a few post-work drinks.
With the ability to download the latest apps and with access to the latest features and functionality, the following are our picks for favorite tough smartphone.
#3 - Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3
Pulling in at number 3, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 is (currently) one of the the latest tough phones on the market.
The Xcover 3 is certified with both IP67 and MIL-STD 810G ratings; so is both water and dustproof as well as capable of surviving drops from heights of up to 1.2 meters.
On the front you'll find a gorgeous 4.5" touchscreen with a resolution of 480x800 pixels, a 2MP front facing camera and physical navigation keys.
The device comes equipped with a 5MP rear facing camera which is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor alongside 1.5GB RAM, all of this running off the generous (and removable) 2200 mAh battery.

#2 - Defender
The Defender is the only dual-sim offering that makes our top three.
While it is a smart device the Defender certainly looks like a tough phone. Clad in hard black plastic and boasting a scratch resistant screen and robust chassis the Defender is more than capable of living up to your everyday tasks.
The device is IP68 compliant so is waterproof at depths of up to 2m for 60min, hopefully long enough for you to fish it out. The Defender is also certified as MIL-STD 810G compliant, so is capable of withstanding drops, shock, vibrations and fluctuations in temperature.
The scratch resistant screen is made from 4" of Asahi Toughened Glass with a display resolution of 480x854.
An 8MP camera adorns the rear of the device and is paired up with a 0.3MP offering on the front. The Defender is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and has 1GB RAM on board - more than enough to keep this device snappy and responsive for years to come.
The Defender is currently available SIM Free at £418.80 (prices subject to availability and change). You can also upgrade on to the Defender for as little as £20.40 per month.
#1 - CAT S50
What can we say about the CAT S50 except that it is probably our favorite tough phone yet and it's easy to see why.
The CAT S50 has a 4.7" display that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a resolution of 720x1280. Another useful addition is the implementation of wet-finger tracking, a great feature where you can still use the touchscreen even if you have wet hands or the screen is wet.
A 1.2GHz quad-core A7 processor lies at the heart of this device and is helped along by 2GB RAM. The device itself is running on Android 4.4 so you can download the latest apps from the Google Play Store, CAT Phones dedicated app store is also pre-installed on this device and contains a selection of CAT Phones favorite apps.
There is an 8MP camera on the front of the device and a VGA front facing camera. Waves MaxxAudio also enhances the audio performance on the CAT S50 offering a better audio experience.
As standard for tough mobiles the CAT S50 is dust and waterproof thanks to it's IP67 rating and can survive drops from up to 1.2 meters thanks to it's robust build and MIL-STD 810G rating.
A 26302mAh battery powers the device and is capable of being charged wirelessly through the use of Qi.
The CAT S50 is currently available SIM Free at £375.00 (prices subject to availability and change). You can also upgrade on to the CAT S50 for as little as £20.40 per month.
