Rugged news - Discovering a Huawei tough mobile phones partnership
What to make of this? Huawei Technologies and Discovery Communications Inc, a company whose networks include Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, are forging a tough mobile phones partnership to launch a co-branded mobile especially for lovers of the great outdoors.
Due to arrive on our shores in time for Christmas, the Huawei-Discovery should be water-resistant, dustproof and anti-shock.
Huawei is a huge company – it had revenues of around £20 million in 2010 and has the technological know-how that goes with a track record of mobile phones and tablet PCs.
Though how they will make the most of a partnership with a television company famed for shows such as "Storm Chasers" and "Deadliest Catch" will be interesting to see. Will we end up with the genuinely rugged, practical and indestructible phone the two companies are no doubt capable of making or will we get a "TV" phone that is more about the marketing than the reality? I'm guessing, and hoping, that we end up with the former.
Useful features will include GPS, torch, compass and G-sensor, as well as the necessary Facebook and Twitter link-ins – after all what's the point of being an outdoorsy and tough mobile phone if you can't share it with the virtual world?
