Splash-proof mobile phones news - New York payphones get high-tech makeover
The mobile phone industry has produced some truly wonderful gadgets over the last few years. Customers are now able to purchase high-tech, durable, tough or even splash-proof mobile phones to endure many challenging situations.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of payphones. These devices often seem neglected, unused or in dire need of repair.
However, New York City's phone booths are being upgraded with new technology in order to bring them into the 21st century.
Next month, 32-inch "smart screens" will be fitted into 250 city payphones.
As well as allowing a person to make telephone calls, these phone booths also feature wireless internet technology and information about local neighbourhoods.
For example, a passerby will be able to access any relevant safety alerts, lists of local restaurants, traffic information and landmark locations all in multiple languages.
The phones will also advertise government programmes and publicise free outdoor events. Even better, they are also dust and waterproof.
If the pilot program is a success, the technology could replace the city's 12,800 outdoor payphones by October 2014.
Although these phone booths may become a common site in New York City, there is no word on whether or not we can expect to see them appearing on British streets.
Until these products come along, buying a durable or splash-proof mobile phone is still the best bet for anyone looking to use their devices in adverse conditions.
