Bluetooth 5 to arrive by Q4 2016 with improved functionality
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) have announced that Bluetooth 5 is set to arrive Q4 2016 (or at the latest Q1 2017).
Talking about the upcoming release executive director of the Bluetooth SIG Mark Powell said, "Today, there are 8.2 billion Bluetooth products in use, and the enhancements in Bluetooth 5 and planned future Bluetooth technical advancements mean that Bluetooth will be in more than one-third of all installed IoT devices by 2020. The drive and innovation of Bluetooth will ensure our technology continues to be the IoT solution of choice for all developers."
Set to arrive by the end of 2016, Bluetooth 5 will double the speed and quadruple the range of low energy connections while increasing the capacity of connectionless data broadcasts by up to 800 per cent.
This becomes increasingly important as over the next few years the IoT (Internet of Things) is expected to become even more prevalent.
