A Game of Phones - Part 2
In the first half of our 'Game of Phones' blog posts we covered which handsets would suit characters Tyrion, Cersei, Daenerys, Sansa, and Arya. We are going to continue now with some of the other popular characters from the series.
Brother to both Tyrion and Cersei and the youngest knight to be promoted to the rank of Kingsguard, Jaime had all that he could want - honor, gold, beautiful women, and a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
Like Jaime when he was knighted, it may be small but it sure is powerful! A dual-core 1.7GHz processor coupled with 1.5GB of RAM makes sure that the handset is responsive and keeps running smoothly. A 4.3" Super AMOLED QHD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 is bright and crisp enough for use on the battlefield.
The handset also comes loaded with the usual bells and whistles that you'd expect from a modern day smartphone: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and GPS (great for when fighting those tourneys around Westeros).
With a plastic body measuring in at 24.6 x 61.3 x 8.94mm and weighing in at only 107g this handset is great for using one-handed - which is perfect for the Kingslayer!
Born of Highgarden, one of the greater houses in Westeros, Margaery has been wed to three kings and widowed twice, all by the age of 16.
Adept at playing in politics and moving toward her goal of becoming queen regent aided by her intelligence, charm, and natural beauty, it only seems fitting that Margaery use a handset like the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (in Yellow, Tyrell house colours of course).
This is a handset that is fit for a queen, the frame is constructed from both metal and glass giving this handset a feel of Tyrell class. Even though the handset may be compact it certainly punches above the belt in the spec sheet. Powered by a Snapdragon 800 SoC this is a chipset that packs a 2.2GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 330 GP - more than enough to keep this politico up to speed. This is all backed up by 2GB RAM that keeps it all running smoothly.
The handset weighs in at 137g, hardly surprising considering its glass and metal construction. Measuring in at 127 x 64.9 x 9.55mm with curved edges and a 720p 4.3" screen, this handset fits comfortably in the hand.
Another bonus is that the handset is waterproof, brilliant for when Margaery wants a soak after the events of the day to keep her 'Growing Strong'.
Being chosen as the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch gives Jon immense responsibility - the task of keeping the realms of men safe from the Wildlings of the North and the White Walkers.
The bastard of Lord Eddard Stark has not had an easy time, being raised in Winterfell as an outsider and then 'taking the black' and roaming the freezing northern wastes. And, as 'Winter is Coming' Jon had better make sure that his handset of choice is up to the task.
This is why we feel that the Google Nexus 5 in White would be Jon's handset of choice. This is a handset that the Lord Commander would feel at ease using. As fast as a Direwolf, with its 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, and 2GB RAM, it should keep things ticking over nicely. The screen is a thing of beauty also, it might not be as beautiful as watching the sunset from the top of 'the Wall' but it's 1080p 5" display can't be far from the mark.
This handset has the latest Android OS onboard - running Android 4.4 (KitKat) for functionality - and with future updates rolling its way it'll remain up-to-date for a long time.
As a woman of the Free Folk living north of the Wall, we can't expect Ygritte to be up-to-date in terms of mobile hardware. This is why we have decided that Ygritte would be best suited using a handset like the Nokia 3310.
This is a handset that was released more than 14 years ago and yet it has managed to stand the test of time - it should serve this young spearwife well. With a plastic body that seems to be made from titanium this is a handset that can be dropped without breaking, keep in mind though that it is not waterproof and has no IP rating.
The handset weighs in at 133g and at 113 x 48 x 22 mm it fits nicely in the hand. With a handset of this age you can't expect any modern features, it is a pretty basic handset with an 84 × 48 pixel pure monochrome display.
However, when it was released back in 2000 it was packing some features that were rarely seen on mobile handsets, ranging from predictive text messaging, 35 ringtones plus ringtone composer and customisable ringtones, voice activated dialing, and changeable front and back covers. Another worthy note is that this handset came with the legendary Snake II game, this is something that will surely help to kill time in Mance Rayder's camps!
This low-born sellsword is a battle hardened warrior, known to have prowess on the battlefield not often seen in Westeros outside the ranks of the Kingsguard.
Living a somewhat nomadic life, Bronn moves about Westeros regularly and encounters its tough terrain often. Due to this we feel that Bronn would make great use of a handset like the NGM Explorer.
This handset is waterproof, dust proof, and drop proof. Running on Android OS 2.3, the screen is made from tough Corning 'Gorilla Glass' and measures in at 3.5". It is a colour 262K TFT capacitive multi-touch screen. It isn't a particularly big handset at only 126 x 65 x 18mm, and weighing 212g it feels reasonably 'weighty' in the hand with its premium quality zinc alloy chassis.
The handset has a range of features that are useful for any intrepid explorer. There's an altimeter, barometer, handy LED torch, GPS functionality, 5MP camera, plus a dedicated SOS emergency button (great for calling in reinforcements at the Battle of the Blackwater). Like our sellsword friend, this handset is supplied unlocked, ready to work on any UK network.
We've added Lord Tywin into our post as we couldn't leave one of the most feared and powerful men in Westeros out could we? (After all he could easily find out where we live and...put an end to us.)
Despite being neither warrior nor knight, Lord Tywin is still a force to be reckoned with. More than capable of wiping out whole houses and family lines if displeased or slighted. Lord Tywin has been Hand to the King twice, father to Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion, and grandfather to two Kings. This is a man who certainly knows how the inner workings of the realm work and is certainly up to the task of getting what he wants.
It is rumored that Lord Tywin defecates solid gold, and while this is absurd, it is certainly true that he is the richest man in Westeros and in charge of one of the most powerful houses ever known.
This is why we feel that Lord Tywin deserves no less than the stunning 24k HTC One (M8). Yes HTC has made a handset from 24k gold! The HTC One (M8) has been lauded as the number one handset to own in 2014 - with a set of top-of-the-range specifications it's not hard to see why.
The M8 is running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset which is a Quad-core 2.3 GHz chip, doubled up with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM. The body is 90% 24k gold with only the screen not being made from this material. Speaking of which, the screen is the best we've seen on a handset so far this year. It's a Super LCD3 capacitive touch-screen running at 1080 x 1920 pixels. Its 5.0" size boasts a 441 ppi pixel density, plus has multitouch capabilities and is crafted from a single sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
As with all HTC handsets since the M7, this handset comes equipped with HTC Boomsound, front facing stereo speakers of astounding clarity for a mobile handset - something that Lord Tywin will be more than happy to listen to the "Rains of Castamere" on.
This variation of the HTC One (M8) would be ridiculously expensive to buy in the stores and surely only a Lannister could afford it!
We've sadly come to the end of our Game of Phones blog posts, let us know if you agree with our choices or if you think any characters we've not yet covered should use a particular handset! We'd be glad to hear your thoughts on our Twitter page (@Tuffphones).
